BIOPHILIA
[ bī-ō-ˈfēl-yə\]

“love of life and all living beings”;  “humanity’s innate tendency to focus on life and lifelike processes,‘’ and to be drawn toward nature, to feel an affinity for it, a love, a craving.”
-
Coined by Erich Fromm in The Heart of Man: Its Genius for Good and Evil (1964) Extended by Edward O. Wilson in Biophilia (1984) and Natalie Angier (2002)

“Curating a sensory-rich spirit of place, honoring our human-nature bond and the innate, visceral, natural affinity and yearning for love and aliveness -  expressed and cultivated through the shape and soul of our story, culture and the patina of time”
-
Expanded definition by Diane Epstein (2022)

There is great aliveness in Diane Epstein’s Fresco Photography/ Biophilic Art with her innate ability to capture the spirit and soul of nature. The layering of colors and images are dynamic, offering the feeling of shifting rays of sunlight, swaying treetops and fluttering fauna. Diane leaves the space to imagine, to expand and to understand our interconnectedness to a world much greater than ourselves. We evolved as a species in a biocentric environment and mounting research supports that incorporating nature into our lives, directly and indirectly, can promote healing, wellbeing and reduce stress.

Biophilia, Art & The Human Connection,

In Conversation: Biophilia, Art & The Human Connection will be an intimate discussion, with LEED® Fellow* Mary Davidge and Dr. Eve Edelstein, Ph.D Neuroscience and MA Architecture, with the artist, Diane Epstein, MA. They will explore the healing elements of Epstein’s approach using 'Fresco Photography’, and other biophilic topics. 'Fresco Photography' is a technique Epstein pioneered in 2004, which entails superimposing images using original photography, painting, and collage.

Mary Davidge previously held the role of Google’s Director of Global Design in Real Estate and Workplace Services, and serves as a Board Member of Biomimicry Institute, Biophilic Institute, The Sierra Institute for Community and Environment, and the Advisory Board of the ILFI Biophilic Design Initiative. Dr. Eve Edelstein’s awards include the Berkeley Prize, the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Latrobe prize and a total of over 14 awards for hospitals in the US and China.

Artistry and Expertise

With over two decades of experience spanning commercial and residential spaces across North America, Europe, and Asia, Diane Epstein is an esteemed artist renowned for her innovative approach to biophilic art. Her unique blend of fresco photography, painting, and collage captures the spirit and soul of nature, breathing life into spaces and fostering a profound connection between occupants and their surroundings.

Material Variety and Environmental Sensibility

Using only the highest quality materials, the art can be printed, painted, and/or collaged on fine art paper, canvas, wood, aluminum, glass, and resin, among other eco-friendly options. This diverse range of materials allows for flexibility and ensures that the artwork aligns seamlessly with the sustainable and environmental considerations of modern architectural and interior design.

Customization for Ambiance and Identity

A fresh infusion of biophilic art and design presents an opportunity to incorporate art as an integral narrative thread within the architectural tapestry. The images can be fully customized to reflect and enhance the ambiance, mood, and identity of the space. This artistic collaboration fosters a unique environment that resonates with the essence of the brand or culture of your client, creating a meaningful and lasting impression on all who inhabit the space.

Artistic Transformation of Spaces

The artwork transcends traditional decoration, becoming an organic extension of the environment itself. Diane Epstein's masterful compositions, whether fresco photography, painting, or collage, offer an invitation to experience the dynamic interplay between nature and the built environment. Each creation tells a story, reflecting the brand or culture of your client, enhancing the psychology and physiology of the space's occupants. This transformative experience encourages aliveness and engagement, breaking free from static walls and conventional design boundaries.

Enhanced Design and Wellbeing

Incorporating biophilic art early in the design process aligns seamlessly with leading architectural and interior design standards, including the principles of "The Practice of Biophilic Design" co-authored by Elizabeth Calabrese and Stephen R. Kellert. Elizabeth Calabrese aptly describes the aliveness of Diane Epstein’s Fresco Photography/Biophilic Art: "There is great aliveness in Diane Epstein’s Fresco Photography/ Biophilic Art with her innate ability to capture the spirit and soul of nature. Diane leaves the space to imagine, to expand and to understand our interconnectedness to a world much greater than ourselves." Research continues to underscore the benefits of biophilic elements in spaces, promoting healing, wellbeing, and reducing stress. The dynamic synergy between architecture, design, and biophilic art creates an environment that elevates the human experience to new heights.
