Shadow and light, narrow and long, tucked away from the maddening crowd. Although often in small clusters, especially the nuns, priests and multi-generation families, if you wander at the odd hour you can find Romans moving about, even alone, but more likely talking to their mamma or lover on their cell phone. They may appear to be in their own world, deep in thought, but more likely they are probably pondering what to prepare or eat for pranzo or cena. Meandering down the shadowed streets, strolling, touching, gesturing, they find protection from the sun in the shade of thick walls, as they have for millennia, as if time stood still. Perhaps it is the sense that time is long here that makes living in Rome so different from other places. No one wants to be hurried, there will always be time to take a stroll or pick up something at the little shops along the way, let one of the artisans or craftsmen fix or make something for you, or have a chat with the locals you pass everyday in the neighborhood.

"I'm not responsible for my photographs. Photography is not documentary, but intuition, a poetic experience. It's drowning yourself, dissolving yourself, and then ... – being sensitive to coincidence. You can't go looking for it; you can't want it, or you won't get it. First you must lose your self. Then it happens".
- Henri Cartier-Bresson
